Do Emergency Plumbers Charge More at Weekends?

Many emergency plumbers do charge more at weekends, as well as in the evenings, overnight and on bank holidays. This is common across the trade, because working outside normal hours costs more to provide. The exact difference varies between businesses, so it is always worth asking before you book.

Why Out-of-Hours Work Often Costs More

Plumbers who offer emergency cover need someone ready to answer the phone and travel at short notice. That person is giving up their evening, weekend or holiday to be available, and businesses usually reflect this in their charges.

Getting parts can also be harder outside normal hours. Many plumbing merchants have shorter opening times at weekends, and some close on bank holidays. A plumber may need to carry more stock or make a temporary repair until the right part can be collected.

Evenings, Weekends and Bank Holidays

Different plumbers set their working hours in different ways. For one business, out-of-hours may start in the early evening. For another, it may only apply late at night. Saturdays are sometimes treated differently from Sundays, and bank holidays may have their own arrangement.

Because of this, it helps not to assume. A call at six in the evening on a weekday may be charged in a different way to a call at the same time on a Sunday. Our page on weekend and night-time plumbing help explains that we can be contacted any time of day or night, including weekends and bank holidays.

Should You Wait Until Monday?

If the problem is under control, waiting may be a sensible choice. A dripping tap, a slow drain or a small leak that stops once you close a valve can often be left until a weekday booking.

However, waiting is not always cheaper in the end. Water that keeps escaping over a weekend can damage floors, ceilings and belongings, and the repair to those may cost far more than the plumbing itself. If you cannot stop the water, or there is a risk to electrics or health, getting help quickly is usually the wiser option.

How to Ask About Charges Before Booking

It is reasonable to ask how charges work before anyone sets off. You might ask whether there is a different charge at weekends or on bank holidays, and when out-of-hours starts and ends. It is also fair to ask whether there is a separate charge for attending, how time on the job is worked out and whether parts are included.

You can also ask whether the plumber is likely to make the problem safe now and return for a full repair later. Knowing this upfront helps you compare options and avoid surprises. A reputable plumber should be happy to explain clearly.
