What Plumbing Problems Cannot Wait Until Morning?

The plumbing problems that cannot wait until morning are the ones you cannot bring under control overnight. If water keeps escaping after you have tried to stop it, or the fault puts people or electrics at risk, it needs help now. If you can make it safe and contain it, it can often wait for a daytime visit.

The Overnight Test: Can You Control It?

At night, the most useful question is simple. Can you stop or contain the problem until the morning without anything getting worse?

Start by turning off the stopcock, if it is safe and you know where it is. If the water stops and the area is safe, you may be able to wait. If water is still pouring out, or the stopcock will not turn, the situation is unlikely to improve by itself overnight.

Problems That Usually Need Help Tonight

Some faults are hard to control however careful you are. A burst pipe that keeps flowing, or a leak from a tank or cylinder that you cannot isolate, can cause a lot of damage in a few hours. Water coming through a ceiling may also mean the ceiling is holding a weight of water.

Any leak near electrics should be treated as urgent. Keep well away, do not touch wet sockets or switches, and consider calling an electrician too. Sewage or dirty water coming up through a toilet, bath or drain is also a health risk and should not be left overnight.

Problems You Can Usually Make Safe Until Morning

Many faults look worrying but can be managed for a few hours. A leak under a sink often stops once you close the small isolating valve on the pipe. A dripping tap can be left with a bowl underneath. A toilet that keeps refilling can usually be isolated at its own valve.

A slow drain or a partly blocked sink can also wait, as long as you stop using it. Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners, as they can damage pipes and make a later repair harder. Note what is happening so you can explain it clearly in the morning.

When Other Factors Change the Answer

Sometimes a problem that could normally wait becomes more urgent because of who is at home. If you have no water at all and someone relies on it, such as an older person, a baby or someone who is unwell, it may be worth calling straight away. The same may be true if your only toilet is out of use.

The size of the risk matters too. A small drip in a garage is different from a drip above an expensive ceiling or a fuse box. Trust your judgement and, if you are unsure, ask for advice rather than waiting and hoping.
