Yes, you can often replace a kitchen sink without changing the worktop. This is usually possible when the new sink fits the existing cut-out and sits the same way as the old one. Problems tend to start when the new sink is a different size, shape or style.
Inset and Undermount Sinks
Most kitchens have an inset sink. This drops into a hole in the worktop, and a rim rests on top of the surface. Because the rim covers the edge of the hole, a new inset sink with a similar or slightly larger rim can often cover the old cut-out neatly.
An undermount sink is fixed underneath the worktop, so the edge of the cut-out is on show. The edge is usually shaped and finished to match that sink. Swapping one undermount sink for another usually means finding one with a very close match in size and shape. Changing from inset to undermount, or the other way round, usually needs worktop work.
Measuring the Existing Cut-Out
Before buying a new sink, measure the hole in the worktop, not just the old sink. Sink makers usually list a cut-out size for each model. If the new cut-out size is the same or slightly smaller than your current hole, and the rim is wide enough to cover it, a straight swap is often possible.
If the new sink needs a bigger hole, the worktop will need to be cut. If it needs a smaller hole, the rim may not cover the gap. It is also worth checking the depth of the bowl, as a deeper sink may clash with the cabinet or pipes underneath.
What the Worktop Is Made Of
The worktop material makes a difference if any cutting is needed. Laminate worktops are often the simplest to alter. Solid wood can be cut but needs sealing well around the new edge to keep water out.
Stone and quartz worktops usually need a specialist worktop fitter with the right tools. This is a separate job from the plumbing and should be arranged with a worktop or kitchen fitter. Worktop cutting is separate from the plumbing, and a plumber can fit and connect the sink once the cut-out is ready.
When Extra Work Is Needed
Even when the worktop stays the same, the plumbing may still need some changes. A new sink may have its waste outlet in a different place, so the trap and waste pipes may need adjusting. If the tap is mounted on the sink, you may also need to check it suits the new tap hole.
Old fittings can be worn, and isolation valves under the sink may not close properly. If you would like help with this side of the job, our team offers sink replacement and fitting and can check the connections at the same time.
