There is no single price for replacing a kitchen sink, because the cost depends on the sink you choose and the work needed to fit it. The biggest factors are the sink itself, whether it fits the existing worktop hole, and how much of the plumbing needs to change. Knowing these factors can help you plan and compare quotes fairly.
The Sink You Choose
The material of the sink plays a big part. Stainless steel sinks are common and come in a wide range of styles. Composite sinks, made from a mix of stone and resin, are often heavier and come in different colours. Ceramic sinks can look smart but are usually heavy and may need careful handling and support.
Size and the number of bowls matter too. A single bowl is simpler than a one and a half or double bowl sink, which has more waste outlets to connect. A larger or heavier sink can also take longer to position and seal properly.
Fitting the Existing Worktop
One of the main things that affects the overall cost is the worktop cut-out. If the new sink fits the hole left by the old one, the job is usually much simpler. If the new sink is a different shape or size, the cut-out may need to change.
Changing a cut-out is worktop work, not plumbing. It is usually done by a kitchen or worktop fitter, especially for stone, quartz or solid wood. This can add a separate cost and another trade to arrange, so it is worth measuring carefully before you buy a new sink.
Waste, Trap and Tap Connections
Every sink needs a waste kit and a trap to carry water away and stop drain smells. A new sink may come with its own waste, or you may need to buy one. If the outlet position is different, the trap and waste pipes may need adjusting to line up.
Tap compatibility is another factor. Some sinks have a tap hole, and some are designed for a tap mounted in the worktop. If your current tap does not suit the new sink, you may need a new tap as well. Our page on kitchen sink installation and replacement explains more about what the job can involve.
Plumbing Changes and Labour
If your washing machine or dishwasher drains into the sink waste, those connections will need to be reconnected or changed. This can add time, especially if the old fittings are worn or the new waste kit has a different layout.
Older pipework, isolation valves that do not work, or supply pipes that need moving can all add to the job. Labour time depends on how many of these extras apply. A clear quote should explain what is included, such as removing the old sink, fitting the new one and testing for leaks.
