The cost of replacing a hot water cylinder depends on the type of cylinder, its size and how much work is needed around it. There is no single price, because every home and every hot water system is set up a little differently. Knowing the main factors can help you understand a quote and ask the right questions.
The Type and Size of Cylinder You Need
The biggest factor is whether you need a vented or an unvented cylinder. A vented cylinder is fed by a cold water tank, usually in the loft. An unvented cylinder is fed straight from the mains and stores water under pressure, so it comes with extra safety parts and stricter rules.
Capacity matters too. A larger cylinder holds more hot water, which can suit a busy household, but it usually costs more and needs more space. Swapping like for like is often simpler than changing to a different type or size.
The cylinder must also suit the way your water is heated. Cylinders made for a gas boiler, a heat pump or immersion heating can differ, and the right choice depends on your whole system.
Pipework, Location and Access
Existing pipework plays a big part in cost. If the new cylinder has its connections in the same places, less pipework may need changing. If the type or size changes, pipes may need to be rerouted or upgraded.
Where the cylinder sits also matters. Many are in an airing cupboard, which can be tight on space. A vented system also has a cistern in the loft, and that may need to be checked, replaced or removed. Awkward access can add time to the job.
Taking out and disposing of the old cylinder is part of the work as well. A full cylinder is heavy, and it needs to be drained safely before it can be moved.
Regulations, Certification and Other Trades
Unvented cylinders are covered by Building Regulations requirement G3. Installation must be carried out by an appropriately competent installer. The work then needs to be certified, either through a competent person scheme or through building control. GOV.UK explains how competent person schemes let registered installers self-certify certain heating and hot water work.
Other trades may also be needed. Wiring for an immersion heater should be done by a qualified electrician. Any work on a gas boiler must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Each of these can affect the overall cost and how the job is planned.
Labour and Getting an Accurate Quote
Labour depends on how long the job takes. A simple swap is usually quicker than a change of system, and extra pipework, access issues or other trades can all add time.
